Drylining, Damp and Building Questions
What is drylining?
Drylining involves fixing plasterboard to walls or ceilings using screws or adhesive. It’s quicker than wet plaster, creates a smooth finish, and allows you to hide insulation, wiring, and pipework behind the board.
What screws should I use for drylining?
Use drywall screws:
- Coarse thread for timber
- Fine thread for metal
They’re designed to bite quickly without damaging the board.
How can I stop damp and mould?
Common methods include:
- Damp proof membranes (DPM)
- Damp proof course (DPC)
- Moisture absorbers or dehumidifiers
- Anti-mould and anti-condensation paints
- Sealing gaps around windows and doors
- Improving ventilation
These help reduce moisture levels and prevent mould returning.
Common Product Questions
What screw and size do I need?
It depends on the job. Different materials need different fixings:
- Timber: Solo wood screws, C2 Strong-Fix, single/twin thread
- Drywall: fine thread for metal studs, coarse thread for timber
- Metal: tek screws or self-drillers
- Decking: exterior-coated decking screws
- Masonry: masonry screws or wood screws with wall plugs
As a rule of thumb, a screw should be 2–3× the thickness of the material you’re fixing.
What’s the importance of wall plugs?
Wall plugs give screws something to grip into when fixing into brick, block, concrete or plasterboard. They:
- Expand in the hole for a secure fixing
- Prevent screws pulling out or damaging the surface
- Spread the load safely, especially for heavier items
Always match the wall plug to the correct screw size.
How do I know which drill bit size to use with a wall plug?
The packaging will usually state the correct drill size. As a quick guide:
Drill to the full depth, clear out the dust, and ensure the plug fits snugly.
What’s the difference between Pozi and Slotted screws?
- Pozi (PZ): Cross-shaped head, better grip, reduced cam-out, the most common choice.
- Slotted: Single straight slot, used mainly for traditional or decorative jobs.
Pozi is generally preferred for speed and ease of installation.
Why are washers important?
- Spread the load
- Protect the surface
- Reduce fastener movement caused by vibration
- Improve the lifespan of the fixing
They’re essential for structural fixings, timber to timber connections, and bolted joints.
What’s the best screw for treated timber?
Treated timber is corrosive, so use a screw with a corrosion-resistant coating, such as:
- C2 Exterior Strong-Fix
- Decking screws
- Exterior organic-coated screws
- Stainless steel screws for maximum protection
Avoid standard zinc-plated screws - they won’t last outdoors in treated wood.
Do you sell stainless steel screws for coastal areas?
Yes. Stainless steel fixings are the best choice near the coast because they resist salt-air corrosion extremely well. Check our stainless steel categories for options.
What are the different screw and nail finishes for?
Choosing the right finish stops rust and increases lifespan:
- Bright / self-colour: Indoor use only
- Zinc plated: Light corrosion protection
- Galvanised: Good exterior protection
- HDG / FirmaGalv: Heavy-duty outdoor use
- Organic/Coated (e.g. decking, exterior screws): Excellent long-term protection, ideal for treated timber
For any outdoor job or treated wood, use a corrosion-resistant finish.
Nail Gun Nails and Fixings
Are FirmaHold nails compatible with my nail gun?
FirmaHold nails are 34° clipped-head nails designed to fit most popular framing nailers. Always check your nail gun manual to be sure.
What’s the difference between First Fix and Second Fix?
First Fix (Framing / Structural):
Large nails (50–90mm). Used for studwork, fencing, joists, structural timber, roofing. Fired with a framing nailer.
Second Fix (Finishing / Trim):
Smaller brads (typically 16G or 18G). Used for skirting, architrave, beading, internal trims, cabinet work.
