Penny Repair Washers
Penny repair washers, sometimes called mudguard washers, are large diameter washers used to spread the clamping load of bolts and screws.
What Is a Penny Washer?
A penny washer is a flat washer with a much larger outer diameter than a standard washer. The increased size allows the washer to distribute the clamping force of a bolt or screw across a wider surface area.
This helps prevent fixings from pulling through softer materials such as timber, plastic or sheet metal, and also makes penny washers useful when repairing damaged or oversized holes.
Because of their large diameter, they are sometimes referred to as mudguard washers.
Typical Uses for Penny Repair Washers
- Spreading the load of bolts and screws
- Repairing oversized or damaged fixing holes
- Supporting thin materials such as sheet metal or plastic
- Reducing hole diameter when fixing into sheet materials
- Packing out fixings where additional spacing is required
Penny Washer Sizes
Penny repair washers are available in common sizes including M6, M8 and M10, making them suitable for a wide range of bolt and screw fixing applications.
| Bolt Size | Typical Outer Diameter |
|---|---|
| M5 | 25mm |
| M6 | 20mm – 30mm |
| M8 | 25mm – 35mm |
| M10 | 30mm – 40mm |

Available Finishes
Penny repair washers are available in different materials depending on the application:
- Zinc Penny Repair Washers – suitable for general internal applications and clean, dry environments.
- Stainless Steel Penny Repair Washers – manufactured from A2 stainless steel for improved corrosion resistance in outdoor or damp environments.
For structural timber fixings requiring even greater load distribution, square plate washers may be more suitable.
