About Advanced Coach Screws

Advanced Coach Screws are a modern replacement for traditional DIN 571 coach screws, offering faster installation and improved performance on site. Designed for heavy-duty fixing, they’re commonly used where strength, speed and reliability are essential.

Featuring an aggressive single slash point and hex flange head, these coach screws drive quickly into timber while helping to reduce splitting. They’re suitable for use in softwood, hardwood and man-made boards, as well as masonry when used with a suitable nylon plug.

Zinc plated with yellow passivation, Advanced Coach Screws provide improved corrosion resistance for general external and structural applications.

What Are Coach Screws Used For?

Coach screws (also known as lag screws or lag bolts) are heavy-duty fixings designed for:

  • Timber-to-timber connections
  • Metal-to-timber fixing
  • Structural timber construction
  • Fencing, decking frames and sleepers
  • Timber posts and landscaping projects

Their hex head remains proud of the surface, allowing high torque installation using spanners or socket drivers.

Why Choose Advanced Coach Screws?

Advanced Coach Screws offer several advantages over standard coach screws:

  • Faster installation thanks to the single slash point
  • Reduced splitting when fixing into timber
  • Hex flange head for improved load distribution
  • Power tool compatibility
  • Supplied with a free socket driver in each box

This makes them ideal for professional trade use where efficiency matters.

Coach Screw Size Guide

Coach Screw Size Thread Diameter Typical Uses
M6 x 25–100mm 6mm Light timber fixing, brackets, metal to timber
M8 x 40–120mm 8mm General structural timber, fencing and joinery
M10 x 40–160mm 10mm Heavy timber connections, posts and sleepers
M12 x 80–160mm 12mm High load structural applications

How to Use Coach Screws

For best results, drill a pilot hole before installation. This helps prevent timber splitting and ensures accurate fixing.

In softwood, drill a pilot hole around half the screw diameter

In hardwood, drill a pilot hole around three-quarters of the screw diameter

Drive the screw using the correct socket or spanner. Where appearance matters, take care not to damage the head during installation.

Where Advanced Coach Screws Sit in the Range

Advanced Coach Screws are a high-performance option within the decking and timber fixing range. They offer faster installation than traditional coach screws while maintaining the strength required for structural applications.

For environments requiring higher corrosion resistance, a stainless or galvanised alternative may be more suitable.
