Coach Screw – Exterior
Traditional hex head coach screws with exterior corrosion-resistant plating for secure timber fixing in outdoor applications.
About Exterior Coach Screws
Exterior Coach Screws are a traditional and reliable method of fastening timber in structural and outdoor applications. Manufactured to DIN 571 standards, they provide strong mechanical fixing where high clamping force is required.
These screws feature a hex head design, allowing installation with a spanner or socket for secure tightening. The corrosion-resistant multi-layer exterior plating is tested to 500 hours salt spray, making them suitable for external use.
Thread Design and Clamping
Coach screws are partially threaded, with the thread length typically measuring approximately two-thirds of the overall screw length.
For example:
A 100mm screw will have around 60mm of thread
This design allows the threaded section to grip firmly in the base material while the smooth shank helps draw materials tightly together.
Typical Applications
Exterior coach screws are commonly used for:
- Timber-to-timber structural connections
- Fencing and gate construction
- Timber frames and sleepers
- Garden buildings and pergolas
- Fixing heavy brackets to timber
They are particularly useful where a strong, traditional fixing method is preferred.
Exterior Corrosion Protection
The patented multi-layer exterior coating provides increased corrosion resistance compared to standard zinc plating. This makes them suitable for general outdoor use, including treated timber and garden structures.
For coastal or high-moisture environments, a stainless steel alternative may be more appropriate.
