Wafter Head Timber Screws – A2 Stainless Steel
A2 stainless steel wafer head timber screws designed for strong timber-to-timber fixing with a low-profile clamping finish.
A2 Stainless Steel Wafer Head Timber Screws are designed as a practical alternative to traditional coach screws for timber-to-timber fixing, offering strong clamping performance with a cleaner, lower-profile finish.
Manufactured from A2 stainless steel, these screws are suitable for general outdoor use and provide reliable corrosion resistance in most external environments. They are ideal for fencing, decking subframes, pergolas and structural timber projects where durability and appearance both matter.
The wafer head provides a wide bearing surface, improving clamping strength while sitting lower and neater than a traditional hex head. This makes wafer head screws particularly useful where a bulky head would be visually intrusive or where a flush-style finish is preferred.
A TX40 recess allows secure driving with reduced cam-out, while the helix shank clears debris during insertion to improve clamping efficiency. The sharp 25° point and single slash tip reduce torque and help minimise timber splitting, even at lower edge distances.
In most softwoods, a pilot hole is not required. However, for dense hardwoods or when fixing close to edges, pre-drilling is recommended for controlled installation.
What Are Wafer Head Screws Used For?
Wafer head timber screws are commonly used where:
- A strong timber-to-timber fixing is required
- A low-profile or neater finish is preferred
- Improved clamping area is beneficial
- External corrosion resistance is needed
Typical applications include decking frames, fencing structures, sleeper projects, timber framing and general outdoor construction.
Why Choose Wafer Head Over Hex Head?
Both provide strong structural fixing, but wafer head screws:
- Offer a lower profile finish
- Provide a wider clamping surface
- Sit flatter against timber
- Deliver a cleaner visual result
Hex head screws, by comparison, are typically chosen for very high-torque or heavy landscaping applications.
Choosing the Right Size
For secure timber fixing, select a screw that penetrates approximately 2–3× the thickness of the top timber into the base material.
As a guide:
- 20–30mm timber → 50–75mm screws
- 35–50mm timber → 100–125mm screws
- 50mm+ structural timber → 150mm+ screws
For hardwoods or dense timber, a pilot hole is recommended.
