Coach Screw – Zinc Plated
Classic zinc-plated coach screws for timber and masonry fixings. Strong, heavy-duty threads for reliable hold in structural timber and beyond.
Zinc-Plated Coach Screws are the original heavy-duty timber fixing – simple, solid, and still the go-to for all kinds of structural work. These traditional woodscrews are designed for timber-to-timber applications or for fixing into masonry when used with a nylon plug.
They’re made from high-quality steel and zinc plated to give added protection against rust, making them suitable for indoor jobs or sheltered outdoor use. The part-threaded shank gives maximum pull-together strength, helping to clamp materials tightly.
✔ Heavy-duty thread for solid hold in timber
✔ Zinc plated for corrosion resistance
✔ Part threaded (approx. 2/3 of the overall length)
✔ Use in wood or masonry (with plug)
✔ Pilot holes may be needed for some hardwoods
✔ Great for general construction, landscaping, fencing, and more
When to Use a Coach Screw
Coach screws are ideal for:
- Joining heavy timbers – like sleepers, fence posts, or beams
- Fixing metal plates, brackets or ironmongery to timber
- Securing timber into masonry with a plug
- Landscaping builds like retaining walls, pergolas or raised beds
- Any job that needs a strong, simple mechanical fixing
They’re a solid choice when you need strength, not speed – especially for load-bearing or structural jobs where a typical wood screw just won’t cut it.
How to Use a Coach Screw
Coach screws are best installed with a spanner, socket or wrench. Here’s how to get the best result:
- Drill a pilot hole – this is essential for dense timbers and helps prevent splitting.
- Pilot should be approx. 1–2mm smaller than the core of the screw
- For hardwoods, use a bit that’s about 75% of the screw’s diameter
- Line up your materials and insert the screw by hand to get it started.
- Drive it in with a socket or impact wrench until snug. Don’t overtighten – it can split timber or strip the thread.
Need to go into brick or blockwork? Use a nylon plug matched to the screw size for a secure fixing.
Zinc-Plated Finish – What It’s Good For
These coach screws are finished with a protective zinc plating. This helps prevent rust and corrosion during construction and over the long term, especially for sheltered or interior use.
Zinc is ideal for:
- General indoor construction
- Outbuildings and dry outdoor projects
- Areas where visual appearance matters – the silver finish is smart and tidy
