Hex Timber Screws – Exterior Silver
Heavy-duty exterior hex timber screws designed for fast installation and high-strength timber-to-timber fixing.
Hex timber screws are a modern upgrade to the traditional coach screw, offering faster installation, stronger pull-together performance and long-lasting corrosion resistance for outdoor projects.
These exterior silver hex timber screws are coated with a patented multi-layer corrosion-resistant plating, tested to withstand up to 1,000 hours salt spray resistance, making them ideal for decking frames, fencing, sleepers and structural garden builds. The integrated fixed washer under the hex head delivers excellent clamping force, while allowing high torque installation with a socket or impact driver.
Unlike traditional coach screws, these screws are designed to drive directly into most softwood and treated timbers without the need for a pilot hole, significantly reducing installation time on site.
The 50° deep single thread provides strong pull-out resistance, ensuring a secure fixing in structural timber. Meanwhile, the helix shank removes debris as the screw drives, improving clamping performance and reducing resistance. A sharp slash point helps reduce splitting, even when fixing close to edges.
Each bag also includes a free socket driver for convenient installation.
What Are the Advantages of Hex Head Timber Screws?
Hex head timber screws offer several advantages over standard wood screws and traditional coach screws:
- Higher torque driving capability
- Faster installation with reduced prep
- Integrated washer for clean clamping
- Stronger pull-together performance
- Improved corrosion resistance for outdoor use
For trade users, this means faster fixing, stronger joints and fewer call-backs.
Do Hex Timber Screws Require a Pilot Hole?
In most softwoods and treated timbers, a pilot hole is not required. However, when working close to edges or in dense hardwoods, a small pilot hole may help reduce splitting.
Choosing the Right Size Hex Timber Screw
As a general guide, the screw should penetrate at least 2.5–3 times the thickness of the top timber into the base material.
- Decking and framing → 75mm–100mm
- Fence rails and structural timber → 100mm–150mm
- Sleepers and heavy landscaping → 150mm+
Selecting the correct length ensures maximum holding strength and structural performance.
Typical Applications
These hex timber screws are commonly used for:
- Decking subframes
- Fence posts and rails
- Garden sleeper walls
- Pergolas and timber structures
- Outdoor landscaping projects
